The Pope’s New Ride is All-Electric!

Pope Francis’s new popemobile will be greener than ever thanks to a startup based in California, United States, as per His Holiness’s awareness for environmental issues.

“I got inspired reading that Pope Francis is very considerate about the environment and the impact of climate change for future generations,” says Henrik Fisker, founder of the electric car startup Fisker.

Based on the Fisker Ocean SUV which will be available to the public in 2022, Pope Francis’s new ride solely runs on electric batteries, and its interior is made of recycled soft-drink bottles and plastic reclaimed from the ocean. The battery has 480 km autonomy, and it only takes 30 minutes to charge it to 80% of its capacity. Since the pope already has a customized Toyota’s Mirai – which means “Future” in Japanese – that runs on fuel-cell energy, Fisker’s Ocean is the second zero-emission vehicle the pope has.
