Additional conservation measures have just been implemented to protect critical environmental zones within the Baltic Sea.
The conservation measures are set to further protect five Natura 2000 sites located within the German Exclusive Economic Zone. The measures are in line with the European Green Deal as well as the European Union’s Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.
Fishing involving mobile bottom-contracting gears is now prohibited in the area, further protecting sensitive seabed habitats and reefs. The measures are likely to have long-term benefits for the region, aiding in creating healthy marine ecosystems and increasing the zone’s resilience to climate change. Germany originally introduced the initiative, which was then agreed upon by all Baltic European Union states. The EU has officially adopted it.
