Public Transport Evolution: First All-Electric Flying Boat in the Works

A Swedish tech company has designed the world’s first all-electric hydrofoil passenger boat, and should the test flight be a success, the vessel could join Stockholm’s public transport network in 2024.

“The P-12 is a platform that will cater to a vast range of clients,” explains Gustav Hasselskog, CEO of Candela Technology AB. “Whether it’s public transport fleets, VIP services, or private customers, it will revolutionize how we travel on water. Often, the quickest route is by water.”

The shuttle version of the Candela P-12 measures just under 12 meters in length, can fit up to 30 passengers, and has space for bicycles and pushchairs. Its hydrofoils – wing-like structures mounted on struts below the hull – lift the vessel out of the water, reducing drag, increasing the speed, and using 80% less energy than conventional ships at high speed. The vessel can be quickly stabilised with sensors and a computer system that gauges wave height and wind speed. Thus, passengers experience 90% less g-force than on a traditional boat, even during rough weather. The Business version of the Candela P-12 has a premium interior and can host 13 to 20 passengers, plus suitcases. The serial production of the P-12 is set to take place near Stockholm.
