Environment United KingdomRecord Renewables Slash Energy Costs and Cut Reliance on Gas
The UK generated record wind and solar power in March 2026, avoiding around £1 billion in gas imports, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and lowering electricity costs.
“This shows how rapidly clean energy can strengthen energy security while cutting costs for consumers,” said Simon Evans, policy editor at Carbon Brief.
Wind generation rose 38% year-on-year while solar output nearly matched the previous year’s strong spring, together producing 11 terawatt hours of electricity, a 28% increase and a new monthly record. This output displaced about 21 terawatt hours of gas, equivalent to roughly 18 liquefied natural gas tankers, and contributed to a 25% drop in gas-fired electricity generation, the lowest level recorded for March. As a result, gas-set electricity prices were lower by around 25% less often than in 2022, marking a significant shift towards more stable and sustainable energy.
