Environment The WorldRenewable Energy Has Taken Over Nearly Half of all Global Electricity!
Thanks to record growth in renewables, clean energy accounted for more than 40 per cent of global electricity generation in 2024.
Renewable solar energy has doubled in the last three years, while wind, hydro, and nuclear energy continue to rise as well. These sources will eventually allow for less fossil fuel demand, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable planet.
The Ember Energy Global Electricity Review collected data from 215 countries. The study affirmed that 2024 saw 40.9 per cent of global electricity generation come from low-carbon sources and that solar generation alone had a 29 per cent growth rate – the highest in six years. However, due to expanding technologies such as artificial intelligence and global heatwaves, there was an overall increase in electricity demand in 2024, contributing to the rise in fossil fuel energy generation. Though it is not yet the case, the study predicts that the balance will soon shift in favour of renewables. The increasing rate of renewable energy will quickly outpace demand growth, allowing for a shift in favour of more sustainable energy sources while phasing out fossil fuels, regardless of global increases in energy demands.
