Renewable Energy Sees Massive Growth Here

With an impressive 11% share of its electricity grid coming from renewable energy sources, Vietnam is one of seven countries to have achieved such a feat in 2021, and the nation is now the 10th largest solar power producer in the world.

From 2017 to 2021, Vietnam’s total output of solar and wind power went from virtually zero to almost 11% — with an 8% growth in the last year — a share higher than some major economies like Japan or France. It is one of the world’s fastest transitions from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

Vietnam is abandoning polluting energy sources in favor of clean energy in its quest to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. In 2019 and 2020, some 100,000 rooftop solar panels were installed, bringing the country’s solar capacity to 16GW. To meet the country’s demand for electricity in a clean way, wind and solar energy sources need to increase, and the electricity grid needs to be expanded and upgraded. Vietnam becomes a beacon in Southeast Asia, proving that with political will and market forces, pro-environmental changes can be made quickly and efficiently.
