Environment EuropeRenewables Beat Fossils in a First Across This Region
Europe reached a historic clean-energy milestone in 2025 as wind and solar generated more electricity than fossil fuels for the first time across the European Union.
“This is a major step forward towards a clean, secure power system built on homegrown renewables,” said Beatrice Petrovich, senior energy analyst at Ember.
Wind and solar supplied a record 30% of EU electricity, surpassing fossil fuels at 29%, while renewables overall accounted for 48% of total power. Solar generation rose 20% to 369 TWh, exceeding coal and hydro, and in 14 of the 27 EU countries, wind and solar now generate more power than fossil sources. The shift is reducing dependence on imported fuels, strengthening energy security, and laying the groundwork for lower, more stable electricity prices as batteries and grids expand.
