Revolutionizing Agriculture, for a Greener Future

Denmark is leading the change in cutting economy-wide emissions by a whopping 70% by 2030, deploying massive efforts to address environmental challenges of agriculture and setting a bold precedent for other countries to follow.

Through its well-balanced policy, Denmark is showing other countries how they can take real action on agricultural emissions. Furthermore, the policy is a testament to the importance of setting ambitious climate targets.

Governments must tackle emissions from food systems to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius — or even under 2 degrees Celsius. To that end, the Scandinavian country is taxing greenhouse gas emissions from livestock production, restoring nature, and paying farmers to reduce nitrogen pollution, most notably through a Green Tripartite Agreement between the government, the environmental community, and the agriculture industry. Not only will the comprehensive policy reduce the country’s nitrogen pollution, but it will also improve biodiversity by restoring peatlands and planting trees.
