All of This Country’s Coal Mines Will Be Closed By 2032

Romania plans on phasing out coal completely by 2032, switching instead to renewable energies and the decarbonization of the transport system as the country wants to do its part for the European Green Deal.

As part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, Romania will replace all conventional power plants on its territory. A large part of the coal mines will be cleared by 2030, and the following two years will be dedicated to stopping all fossil fuel production.

Turning to renewables such as hydrogen, the country plans the share of renewable energy to reach 34% by 2030. And to ensure transport system decarbonization, eco-taxes will be introduced, the registration of cars older than 15 years will be discouraged, and a tax incentive for zero-emission vehicles will be put in place.
