Say Hello to the World’s Largest Floating Hydro-Solar Farm

The “world’s largest floating hydro-solar farm,” capable of reducing carbon emissions by 47,000 tons each year, has been installed in Ubon Ratchathani, a northeastern province of Thailand.

The 720,000-square-meter solar farm is only the first of 15 farms Thailand plans to build in an effort to reach its carbon neutrality commitment by the year 2050. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha shared his admirable intention for Thailand: “[We will] ramp up measures in tackling climate change in any way imaginable.”

Currently, 55 percent of energy in Thailand is derived from natural gas, while only 11 percent stems from renewables and hydropower, according to the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EGAT). However, by the year 2037, the EGAT plans for over 30 percent of the nation’s annual power needs to be provided for by floating hydro-solar farms. A 415 meter long “Nature Walkway” has also been installed, providing locals and tourists alike with panoramic views of the floating solar farm.
