School Meals for Children Have Quadrupled (Thank You, Donors!)

A crisis appeal generated a generous response, allowing a Scottish organization to quadruple the number of vital meals served daily in more than 200 schools in Tigray, Ethiopia. This provides children with essential sustenance and encourages access to education.

“The fact that we received such an incredible response to our crisis appeal and have been able to expand our program in Tigray so rapidly is a testament to how generous our supporters are, how highly respected our partner is, as well as the capability and determination of our Tigrayan colleagues and the communities they work alongside,” explains Alex Keay, Director of Programs at Mary’s Meals.

In 2023, Mary’s Meals served around 24,000 schoolchildren. This year, the organization managed to increase the number of meals to 110,000. As the African country is slowly recovering from a 2-year civil war, more than 2 million Tigrayans risk starvation, and millions more suffer from food insecurity, making the presence of Mary’s Meals all the more crucial. The organization’s unique school feeding model is embedded in communities and relies on local volunteers. “Mary’s Meals will continue to work with its global movement of supporters and volunteers to feed more children in Tigray. We will not stop until we are no longer needed.”
