West Africa’s First Wind Farm Will Generate Electricity for Two Million People

Senegal has just launched West Africa’s first extensive wind farm: with this significant addition, the nation will achieve its goal of having 30% of its energy come from renewable sources.

When the 158-megawatt wind farm reaches full capacity later this year, it alone will produce around one-sixth of Senegal’s power supply, providing electricity to two million residents.

“The energy mix we have today allows us to move past our dependence on petrol,” says Papa Mademba Biteye, director-general of electricity company Senelec.

The new facility will decrease carbon dioxide emissions by 300,000 metric tons annually.
