…And Yet Another Country Joins the Anti-Coal Bandwagon!

Spain is the latest country to join an international coalition dedicated to close down all coal plants by 2030, a wise decision meant to curb carbon emissions and pollutants.

“Spain making a 2030 commitment, rather than passively relying on market forces, adds crucial momentum,” says Charles Moore from Ember, an independent climate and energy think tank focused on accelerating the global electricity transition.

Spain intends to close down 85% of all its coal plants by 2022, and transform its energy production to rely on renewable sources. The Powering Past Coal Alliance has 23 national governments among its 133 members, and advocates for the transition away from coal-generated energy towards greener sources to speed up. Spain’s decision may help greatly influence fellow European countries like Germany, Czech Republic, and Poland to also abandon coal burning.
