Speeding Through the Transition to Electric Driving

Fuel consumption in China is falling ahead of schedule thanks to the nation’s electric car expansion.

“If the entire distance traveled by electric vehicles has been driven on gasoline, China’s gasoline demand would have been about 14 percent higher this year and total oil demand would have been about three percent higher,” explains energy analyst Lauri Myllvirta from Helsinki’s Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air.

Data coming from China’s National Petroleum Corporation shows that roughly 1.3 per cent less oil was consumed in 2024 compared to the previous year, or 394 million tons, down from 399 million tons. This decrease suggests that the move away from combustion vehicles is decreasing overall fossil fuel consumption, with some experts suggesting fossil fuel consumption in China has already reached its peak and will now continue to decline. For now, China is simultaneously the world’s largest CO₂ emitter and one of the international leaders in electric vehicle sales. July of 2024 marked a special moment for the country when, for the first time, more battery-electric and plug-in hybrid cars were registered in the nation than purely combustion engines. This green transition is very welcomed as the world as a whole continues to find ways to move away from non-renewable resources.
