Startup Looks Into Mother Earth’s Core for Clean Energy

An American geothermal startup plans on harvesting the intense heat emanating from the Earth’s core and even intends to repurpose fossil-fueled power plants to turn them into a clean and limitless energy source.

“We need a massive amount of carbon-free energy in the coming decades,” says Mark Cupta from Prelude Ventures, a major investor in the startup. “Quaise Energy offers one of the most resource-efficient and nearly infinitely scalable solutions to power our planet. It is the perfect complement to our current renewable solutions, allowing us to reach baseload sustainable power in a not so distant future.”

Quaise will use fusion technology to drill the world’s deepest hole — up to 20 km deep — to reach the Earth’s ultra-deep geothermal energy where temperatures are close to 500 °C. By tapping only 0.1% of that heat source, it would be possible to supply the world’s energy needs for more than 20 million years. By 2028, the goal is to use as many existing coal-fired infrastructures — there are 8,500 around the world — which will have to be repurposed after 2050. The idea is to use the premise to convert steam into electricity, keeping the power plants running without emitting any pollution.
