Society UzbekistanSteady Commitment to Reduce Poverty, and Improve Equality
The poverty rate in Uzbekistan continues to drop partly thanks to beneficial government programs.
“Reducing gaps in these dimensions [education and employment] between households will be critical for tempering the rise in inequality and further reducing poverty,” reads the World Bank document.
Uzbekistan held a 17 per cent poverty rate just a few years back. Today, that rate has fallen to 8.9 per cent, according to the Ministry of Employment. This means about 720,000 Uzbeks were able to climb above the poverty line – about $51 per month – last year. Meanwhile, the average monthly income grew by 10.7 per cent following governmental programs that helped foster entrepreneurship and provide education on homesteading and farming. The World Bank has praised Uzbekistan for its efforts, as it works towards a society more aligned with equality and opportunity.
