EnvironmentSwapping Parking Spots for Trees!
The City of Lights will transform 60,000 parking spots into shaded green spaces throughout Paris by 2030, thus better protecting the citizens of France’s capital against extreme heat events.
“Trees and nature are natural air conditioners,” explain Paris officials. “Their development makes the city more pleasant to live in during periods of high heat.”
The swapping parking spaces for trees will add some 300 hectares of green space in Paris by 2030, with 10% installed by 2026. Additionally, shaded structures will be incorporated for pedestrians to enjoy, as well as cooling centres and reflective or insulated roofs on public buildings. Furthermore, outdoor work schedules will be replanned to protect workers during peak temperatures. The project’s details are outlined in the 2024-2030 Climate Plan. The proposed plan furthers the city’s progress toward a more sustainable and less car-centric community. So far, green measures have been implemented, such as higher parking fees for SUVs, erecting an urban forest, and the initiative to make Paris entirely cyclable by 2026. So far, there are 1,442 kilometres of cycling routes and 130 oasis squares throughout the city, more sustainable food options are offered in schools, and household waste per capita has been reduced by 450 kg per year, or around 20% down compared to 2005.
