Same-Sex Marriage is Now Legal Here

Switzerland has officially become the 30th country in the world to allow same-sex marriage – and the first marriage will take place in July 2022!

Same-sex partnerships in Switzerland have been recognized since 2007, though these partnerships contained certain restrictions. The newly passed law will now allow for same-sex couples to adopt children or to have children through sperm donors.

Jan Muller, an advocate for the passing of same-sex marriage emphasized that “It is a historic day for Switzerland, a historic day when it comes to equality for same-sex couples, and it is also an important day for the whole LGBT community.”

Switzerland is among the last Western European countries to legalize marriage for same-sex couples. Though the law was officially passed by the Swiss government back in December of 2020, it was sent into a referendum after being challenged by opponents. In the end, same-sex marriage garnered two-thirds of support from voters, officially making it legal in the country.
