Bangkok is Now Home to Asia’s Largest Rooftop Farm

Thailand has proudly unveiled its newest environmentally-friendly urban rooftop farm – and it’s the largest in all of Asia! The farm atop Thammasat University’s Rangsit campus in Bangkok opened this month, boasting a space of 7,000 square metres.

More and more rooftop farms are popping up in cities around the world because of their local and environmental benefits. Not only do they provide locally-grown, accessible fresh produce, but they also help curb the impacts of climate change.

“We tend to make a distinction between buildings and green spaces but green spaces can be part of building design in cities like Bangkok, which has few green spaces,” says Kotchakorn Voraakhom, landscape architect behind the project. “Rooftops are usually underutilized but they can be green spaces that reduce the urban heat-island effect, the environmental impacts of buildings and land use, and also feed people.”

“There are limited opportunities to create new green spaces in cities,” she adds to the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “Urban rooftop farms are an easy and effective climate solution, and should be the norm.”
