Society RwandaThe Goal: Making Sure Every Student Is Fed
A school-feeding program has been successfully implemented in seven districts in Rwanda. The program provides nutritious meals to children while promoting their education, health, and sanitation.
“Rwanda is very commendable in how it has committed the government’s budget in the last few years, from $29 million in 2021 to over $53 billion in this school year,” explains Ahmareen Karim, World Food Programme’s (WFP) Director in the country.
With the help of WFP, school meals now cover 3.8 to 4 million school children from pre-primary to secondary levels. The Rwandan government aims to ensure that every child receives a healthy meal every day by 2030. The School Meals Coalition brings together 78 countries and 86 partners that support sustainable school meal programs and emphasize the human capital agenda. Rwanda has adopted a leadership role within the group by committing to universal school meal coverage.
