This City Is on the Road to Becoming “100% Cyclable”

Massive investment to expand bike lanes and parking spaces has just been announced for the city of Paris, France, in an effort to make the city safer for cyclers and greener for the world.

The 250-million-euro investment is expected to add 180 kilometers of permanent, segregated bike lanes and more than triple the number of bicycle parking spaces in the city by 2026.

The French capital’s mayor Anne Hidalgo and her administration’s commitment to a “100% cyclable” city includes improving conditions for cyclers at major intersections, such as routes from the periphery into the inner city, and creating enough segregated paths that will allow cyclers to carry out their entire journey on a separate bike path, rather than sharing a lane with vehicles or pedestrians.

“The priority is the safety of all users of public space,” the city’s release says. Additional police checks, the implementation of a “street code,” and a commitment to investing in bicycle training for young children are all in the works. The plan could soon rank Paris as one of the most bike-friendly major cities in the world.
