This Eye Disease Is Nearly Eradicated Here

Zimbabwe is closer than ever to eliminating trachoma across all districts and populations.

“I started in 2019. It’s been quite a long journey, but also exciting to see people being relieved of their pain,” says Peter Bare with Sightsavers Zimbabwe.

Only three years ago, trachoma was present across 21 of Zimbabwe’s 63 districts. Today, the disease can only be found in three districts nationwide. Local healthcare teams working alongside the Zimbabwe Ministry of Health gathered information to determine which families and areas needed the most assistance and what needed to be done to prevent future infections. The massive progress in the last three years alone brings hope that eliminating trachoma across Zimbabwe could soon be the reality. As of late, the work has been focused on reaching the most remote communities in the country, providing them with the necessary treatment and education to eliminate the disease once and for all.
