Heroes IndiaThis Man’s Foundation Is All About Saving Lives
The foundation set up by an Indian financier to reduce deaths related to road accidents nationwide is growing, and its success is putting the organization on the path to international recognition.
“[Through the SaveLIFE Foundation] we enabled police to carry out more tactical enforcement, we strengthened trauma care and carried out education campaigns for road users,” explains Piyush Tewari, founder of the SaveLIFE Foundation. “I definitely see an opportunity for us to go global. We are currently in talks with some countries to see if we can expand our work more rapidly.”
Every year, an estimated 1.35 million people, or 90% of the world’s fatal road accidents, take place in low- and middle-income countries. Active in 15 of India’s 28 states, SaveLIFE is providing first-aid skills to save lives post-accident to alleviate the daily death toll of 400 people nationwide – half of the people injured perish despite having treatable injuries. Twenty thousand police officers and 10,000 volunteers have been trained over the last decade, resulting in approximately 350,000 saved lives. Tewari hopes to save a million lives by 2027 through the Zero Fatality Corridor model. His engagement and dedication led to the introduction of the Good Samaritan Law, which encourages bystanders to help victims without being involved in legal and administrative problems with the police.
