This Wooden Card Could Cut Plastic Waste in Landfills

A German tree-planting search engine intends to revolutionize the transaction experience by producing the world’s first wooden debit and credit card that could prevent millions of plastic cards from ending up in landfills.

“Our goal is simple: we want to help banks offer more eco-friendly cards to consumers,” says Ajay Bhalla, president of Cyber and Intelligence at Mastercard which powers search engine Ecosia’s TreeCard.

Since each sustainably-sourced cherry wood tree can produce more than 300,000 cards, it would only take a few trees to produce millions of cards. Plus, 80% of TreeCard’s profits will go directly to Ecosia’s tree-planting projects, and it will be possible to track transactions through an app to see how many trees are planted with each purchase.
