Social Media Giant Changes Its Rules to Protect Children

The video-sharing company TikTok is adopting stricter rules for children under 16 in an effort to prevent groomers from preying on children and ensure the security of underage users on the social media platform.

“The groundbreaking changes announced today mark the next step in our mission to ensure TikTok is a safe platform for all our users,” says Alexandra Evans, TikTok’s European head of child safety, adding, “We are continuously evolving our policies and investing in our technology and human-moderation teams so that TikTok remains a safe place for all our users to express their creativity.”

Users under the age of 16 will no longer be able to receive comments from strangers. Their videos won’t be available for downloading nor for duets, a feature that allows users to record a video of themselves alongside another user’s post. In addition, their account will be automatically set to “private”, a default setting that also applies for users under 18. That way, only friends can view their videos and share comments.
