Turtles move on: from endangered species to a new nest-record

Once threatened, Loggerhead sea turtles lay increasing numbers of eggs along the coast of the US State of Georgia. 2019 may even break the record for the number of turtles nesting – the successful outcome of hundreds of people caring for these endangered turtles.

An astonishing comeback of the loggerhead sea turtle has been witnessed on the Atlantic coast of Georgia, USA, more than 40 years after they were declared an endangered species by the federal government.

So far about 1,780 nests have been counted along the coastline. As the loggerhead turtles lay their eggs mainly between May and September, researchers expect that the record year 2016 – when about 3,300 nests were counted – will be beaten this season.

“I suspect that at the pace we’re going right now, we will probably meet that and possibly break it” said Doug Hoffman, biologist with the National Park Service, as the New York Times reports.

“There’s been a lot of people involved in the last 50 years in turtle conservation in Georgia. It’s a big collaborative effort with volunteers, professional biologists and other folks helping out, so we are really hopeful.”, he added.
