Seahorses Check Into Underwater “Hotels”, Save Their Species

“Seahorse hotels” have been providing a safe space for Australia’s Sydney seahorse, helping the endangered species breed and grow back in population. Now, these hotels are taking off in other countries to shelter even more seahorses!

The endangered Sydney seahorse, also known as White’s seahorse, was first discovered in Sydney Harbor, and has significantly declined in population due to a vast loss of natural habitats over the years.

“We devised seahorse hotels to help reverse the decline in White’s seahorse populations,” explain the marine biologists in The Conversation. “And we named them so because we considered them to be a temporary residence while their natural habitats recovered.”

Since the project took off in Australia, the seahorse hotel has gained international traction – and now, hotels are also being set up internationally, including in Gibraltar, Greece, USA, the Philippines and Indonesia.
