U.N. Takes Climate Action, Plants Massive Urban Forests

The United Nations (U.N.) plans to plant half a million hectares of urban forests to improve air temperatures and other climate issues in Africa and Asia’s fast-growing cities.

Britain’s Kew Royal Botanic Gardens will collaborate with the U.N. to grow forests in 90 cities across 30 of the two continents’ countries.

It is estimated that around 70% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050, mainly in Africa and Asia, and environmental issues could worsen with rapid urbanization.

Planting trees, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, would reduce the risk of degradation, floods and heatwaves, and improve air quality.
