A record number of southern right whale mothers and calves have returned to traditional breeding grounds in Australia, showing powerful signs of species recovery after decades of protection.
“We were hoping for a bumper year, and we’re really relieved that there’s a lot of whales around … this is a good sign of hope,” said marine biologist Dr Claire Charlton.
Nearly 200 whales were spotted this calving season, including 70 mother-calf pairs at one key site — the highest number recorded since 2016. Aerial surveys estimate the population now ranges between 2,300 and 3,900 individuals, about one-quarter of pre-whaling levels. Decades of strict conservation laws have helped the species rebound, and with each season bringing more mothers and calves, the ocean’s giants are steadily returning to their former strength.
