It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane – No, It’s a Flying Racing Car!

In the wake of the drone market’s explosion, the race to create flying cars reached a new level, with the historic and successful testing of a flying car remotely operated and piloted on a racetrack.

“We are proud to make history by introducing the world’s first racing series for flying electric cars,” says Matt Pearson, founder of Alauda Aeronautics in Australia.

The Alauda Airspeeder Mk3 EXA – an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicle – was tested under the supervision of Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority. The air-bound vehicle powered by four powerful rotors can reach 500 meters of altitude, and can go from 0 to 99.8 km/h in 2.8 seconds – a fraction slower than F1 cars. The Airspeeder series is the closest thing to actual piloted flying cars, but further tests must be completed before humans can drive them from the cockpit. The company is hopeful that races will be held by the end of the year, and went as far as planned three events in 2021.
