Fruits in the City: World’s Largest Rooftop Farm in Paris

Urban farming company Agripolis is working with Cultures en Ville in developing the world’s largest urban rooftop farm, located in the capital of France, centering on biodiversity and maintaining a low carbon footprint.

The farm is set to open at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles in France early next year, in an area of around 14,000 square meters, with a plan to harvest 1000 kilograms of fruit and vegetables of over 30 different plant species. Twenty gardeners will be working on the site, although residents will also have the chance to be involved in the project with 140 cultivation spaces available for leasing. Le Perchoir, the third partner of the project, will run an on-site restaurant that includes seasonal produce picked fresh from the rooftop farm.

“The goal is to make the farm a globally-recognised model for sustainable production,” says Agripolis founder Pascal Hardy. “We’ll be using quality products, grown in rhythm with nature’s cycles, all in the heart of Paris.”

No pesticides, chemicals, or soil will be used for farming, and a closed water system will curb potential pollutants. The produce will also be available to directly on site, which Hardy explains will “reduce food miles”, while calling the farm a “haven for biodiversity”.
