Worldwide Trend Toward Electric Vehicle Adoption

23 countries have officially passed the electric vehicle “crucial tipping point.”

There tends to be an adoption curve when transitioning toward new technologies. Electric car sales have been no exception. Studies show that once 5 percent of all new car sales are electric, the tipping point toward mass adoption has been reached. So far, 23 countries have reached this threshold.

Among the 23 countries are Canada, Australia, Spain, Thailand, Hungary, The United States, China, and many Western European countries. In the United States alone, electric vehicle (EV) sales are up by 42 percent in the second quarter of 2023 compared to the same period the year before. Expectations are high as Tesla, Chevrolet, Ford, and Jeep have all entered the EV world. “If the trends hold true, the rest of this decade will be remembered for doing for electric cars what the 1980s did for the microwave oven,” says Tom Randall of Bloomberg Green.
