Protecting Forests, Wildlife and Water

Ecuador has officially created the Ulba – Baños de Agua Santa Conservation and Sustainable Use Area (ACUS), protecting nearly 21,986 acres (8,897 hectares) of cloud and montane forests.

“Ulba – Baños de Agua Santa expands protection in the Llanganates-Sangay corridor, further supporting the free movement of wildlife between the national parks,” the announcement states.

Nestled between Sangay and Llanganates National Parks in Tungurahua Province, this new area helps link wildlife habitats, allowing animals such as Andean bears, mountain tapirs, pumas, and threatened frogs to roam more freely. The region also protects rivers that form part of the upper Pastaza basin, which is crucial for the water security of downstream communities. Beyond biodiversity, the designation opens doors to sustainable tourism income and job opportunities for local youth and women. By blending ecological protection with community benefit, this reserve embodies conservation for both nature and people.
