Family-Led Rewilding Project Protects Vast Natural Habitat

A family-led conservation effort has transformed former cattle ranchland into the country’s largest private protected area, safeguarding vital freshwater ecosystems and wildlife in Colombia.

“Akae is priceless – you cannot put a price on it,” said Camila, one of the siblings leading Akae Conservancy’s conservation and rewilding work.

Covering 20,000 hectares, Akae Conservancy protects 37 ecosystems, including grasslands, wetlands, forests and savannas, as well as 210 kilometres of rivers and streams that contribute to a region supplying around 30% of Colombia’s freshwater. Since the family chose conservation over development in 2020, biodiversity surveys have recorded 257 bird species, 63 mammal species, and 76 fish species, while camera traps have documented wildlife, including Jaguars, Pumas, Ocelots, and Giant Anteaters. Recognised as the country’s largest private protected area in 2023, the reserve also works with scientists, national parks and local communities to support environmental education, sustainable livelihoods and long-term ecosystem restoration, creating a lasting legacy for both people and nature.
