Atlantic puffins are making a comeback in Maine, USA, thanks to years of restoration efforts that rebuilt nesting spaces and coaxed the birds back to thrive in once-lost habitats.
“The first adult puffin to return arrived after four years of effort,” the report notes, reflecting how persistence and careful planning finally paid off.
Conservationists used decoys, mirrors, and recordings of puffin calls to attract returning birds, working steadily for years. The project reestablished a thriving colony on Eastern Egg Rock and other islands, where puffins had long been absent. As nesting and reproduction resume, these seabirds not only benefit but also help rebuild marine ecosystems, contributing to cleaner shores, more balanced fish populations, and renewed coastal biodiversity.
