Health Pacific IslandsThese Diseases Wiped Out Across the Pacific
A significant health victory has been achieved as 21 Pacific island countries have eliminated both measles and rubella, and Japan has now officially eliminated rubella as well.
“I congratulate the Pacific island countries and areas and Japan for these important achievements,” said Dr Saia Ma’u Piukala, WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific.
These milestones, verified through WHO’s global certification process, demonstrate the power of strong vaccination systems and regional cooperation. Japan built on its earlier success in eliminating measles in 2015, while Pacific nations overcame vast distances and logistical barriers to reach every island community. Together, these efforts have safeguarded millions of children and brought the Western Pacific closer to a future free of measles and rubella — proof that persistence and solidarity can eliminate preventable diseases.
