New Investment Supports Vaccine Production Growth

People across Africa could gain stronger access to locally produced vaccines as new investments aim to expand manufacturing capacity and strengthen long-term health security.

“As our manufacturing partners continue down the pathway towards prequalification and full commercialisation, we believe that the new investments enabled by AVMA+ (African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator) will accelerate the timelines for when African demand for vaccines will be met by local production,” said Dr Sania Nishtar, Chief Executive Officer of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

The proposed AVMA+ measures would invest US$189 million to strengthen Africa’s vaccine manufacturing ecosystem by addressing regulatory barriers and supporting market growth. The initiative also plans to directly purchase up to 70 million doses from emerging African manufacturers once products become available. Since the launch of AVMA in 2024, 13 technology transfer agreements have been signed across six countries, and US$ 3 billion in additional financing has been mobilised, with the first Africa-manufactured vaccines potentially reaching communities as early as 2027.
