Debt Relief Programme Supports Nearly 60,000 Producers

Nearly 60,000 farmers and producers in Mexico will receive debt forgiveness or reduced repayment plans, helping thousands regain financial stability and continue their livelihoods.

“The programme covers 99.5 per cent of all clients with overdue loans, which means that virtually all producers with debt will receive some kind of benefit,” said Mónica Fernández, head of the Institute to Return Stolen Goods to the People.

The initiative covers 59,967 producers with outstanding loans worth 11.12 billion pesos through the now-liquidated National Rural, Agricultural and Fisheries Development Finance Corporation. More than 41,000 producers with smaller debts will have their loans cancelled entirely, while others will receive discounts of up to 30 per cent and restructured repayment terms. The programme also provides full debt forgiveness for 11,761 women with lower-value loans, many of whom were found to have been unfairly burdened with debts. By easing long-standing financial pressures, the measure aims to strengthen rural communities and support agricultural production nationwide.
