Electric Motorcycles Gain Momentum and Create New Opportunities

Electric motorcycle adoption is accelerating across Africa, helping riders lower operating costs while supporting cleaner transport and growing local manufacturing industries.

“These developments show that the industry is now moving on from proving that a market for electric motorcycles exists in Africa to focusing on improving the product and solutions that will underpin the next phase,” said clean transport analyst Remeredzai Joseph Kuhudzai.

More than 100 companies have entered the sector, driven by demand from a market of over 30 million motorcycle taxi operators. In Kenya, electric motorcycles have already accounted for more than 16% of new motorcycle sales, while leading manufacturer Spiro has deployed over 100,000 electric motorcycles, built more than 2,500 battery-swapping stations, and completed over 30 million battery swaps. Manufacturers are now focusing on better battery performance, durability and local production. New models offer faster charging, improved safety features and designs tailored to African road conditions, helping riders spend more time earning income while reducing fuel and maintenance costs. The sector’s rapid growth is positioning electric mobility as both an economic opportunity and a cleaner transport solution across the continent.
