Electric Bus Fleets Reach Major Milestone

Latin American cities now operate 10,000 electric buses, expanding cleaner public transport and reducing pollution across 80 cities in 13 countries.

“Reaching 10,000 electric buses in operation shows that the transition to zero-emission transport is no longer a promise but a reality in Latin American cities,” said Ilan Cuperstein, C40 Cities Regional Director for Latin America.

Santiago, São Paulo and Bogotá together operate more than 7,000 electric buses, with the regional fleet estimated to avoid over 10 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. In São Paulo, 500 new electric buses introduced in June are expected to cut annual diesel use by about 20 million litres and avoid 45,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, demonstrating how financing and fleet-renewal policies can help other cities accelerate the transition.
