Environment CanadaVast Boreal Forest and Peatlands Secured for Conservation
Canada has protected more than 81,400 hectares of carbon-rich boreal forest and peatlands, safeguarding vital ecosystems and strengthening climate resilience.
“Protecting nature at the scale needed to make a difference for the future of our grandchildren, communities and planet takes strong partnerships,” says Dana Kleniewski, Regional Vice-President for Ontario at the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
Located in northern Ontario, the Taiga Forests and Peatlands project protects forests, wetlands, and soils that store vast amounts of carbon, filter freshwater, and help ecosystems withstand droughts, wildfires, and flooding. The initiative brings the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s total boreal conservation efforts in northern Ontario to more than 230,000 hectares, over three times the size of Toronto. Supported by public and private partners, including a C$2 million provincial investment, the project also explores carbon financing to fund long-term conservation. Collaboration with Indigenous communities aims to strengthen sustainable stewardship and preserve biodiversity for future generations.
