Society The WorldBig Win: Islamophobia Is Officially Condemned
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) unanimously adopted a resolution condemning Islamophobia, and through this landmark motion, the international community is showing its eagerness to eliminate all forms of intolerance and discrimination based on religion or belief.
“Our voice against the rising tide of Islamophobia has been heard and the UN has adopted a landmark resolution introduced by Pakistan, on behalf of OIC [Organisation of Islamic Cooperation], designating 15 March as International Day to Combat Islamophobia”, says Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan, the first Muslim leader to raise the issue at the UN in his 2019 UNGA address.
The resolution adopted by consensus by the 193 members and co-sponsored by 55 countries — mainly Muslim — reflects the sentiment of more than 1.5 billion Muslims around the world and condemns Islamophobia, whether in the form of hate speech, discrimination, or violence. The UN wishes to raise global awareness about the growing and disturbing phenomenon and send a clear message of tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and interfaith and cultural harmony among races, nations, and religions.
