Bullfighting Is No Longer Legal Here

Sinaloa has become the fifth Mexican state to ban bullfighting altogether, a decision activists deem to be beyond positive since the authorities have categorized the traditional activity as animal cruelty.

“This is an important reform in Mexico because it reflects the views and sentiments of the majority of Mexican citizens who believe that bullfighting should be banned,” says Felipe Marquez, animal cruelty program manager for Humane Society International/Mexico.

According to a survey taken in 2013, 73% of the population approves of the nationwide ban. So far, Sonora, Guerrero, Cohahuila and Quintana Roo have also applied the ban. As of now, the Animal Welfare Law, the Environmental Law for Suitable development, and the Penal Code in Sinaloa include the ban on bullfighting and better protection of the wildlife. Acts of animal cruelty are punishable with $1,000 fines.
