Country Famous for Its Cars Is On Board to Stop Selling Fossil-Fueled Ones

Germany now backs the European Union’s plan to completely phase out the sale of combustion cars from 2035 and onwards, and the country’s powerful car industry will contribute to taking up the many challenges required to transform the automotive manufacturing sector.

“The new German government stands behind the EU Commission’s draft and thus fully supports the end of the internal combustion engine for cars and vans in the EU from 2035,” says environment minister Steffi Lemke. “New passenger cars and light commercial vehicles [with] internal combustion engines will no longer be allowed after 2035.”

Germany had early on pushed for an exemption to be made for cars using synthetic e-fuels made from renewable energies, but according to environmentalists, e-fuels are not a realistic alternative to e-cars, nor are they sustainable since they are much more inefficient. An increasing number of countries have already adopted a set policy that includes a definite phase-out of the combustion engine.
