Electricity Prices Drop by Nearly a Quarter as Clean Energy Expands

Across Europe, electricity prices fell by around 24% between 2023 and 2025, as growing wind and solar capacity reduced reliance on expensive fossil fuels.

“Accelerating renewable deployment can largely reduce Europe’s electricity markets’ exposure to fossil fuel shocks,” the report states, underlining how clean energy is reshaping price stability.

The impact is already significant: solar power alone has saved more than €100 million per day since March 2026, with total savings exceeding €3 billion. Countries like Spain have rapidly expanded capacity, adding over 40 GW since 2019, making electricity prices less dependent on volatile gas markets, which surged sharply during recent geopolitical tensions. Experts say further investment in storage, flexible grids and home solar could unlock up to €67.5 billion in savings this year, while strengthening energy security and accelerating the shift away from fossil fuels.
