Society KenyaCountry-Wide Electricity Access Is on the Works Here
Kenya is on track to achieve universal access to electricity.
Only 37 percent of Kenya’s population had access to electricity in 2013. By 2023, the number had risen to 79 percent.
To achieve such progress, Kenya has shifted toward clean energy technologies, and thanks to strong policy implementation, it is now considered to have a leading economic and energy development sector within its region. Today, nearly 90% of Kenya’s electricity generation is derived from renewable energy sources, including geothermal, hydro, wind, and solar. What’s more, the 2015 Last Mile Connectivity Project connected nine million rural inhabitants to the electric grid and expects an additional 280,000 households to join by the end of the year. Kenya also holds the title of having Africa’s largest wind farm and continues to make advancements in access to clean cooking. The nation is well on track to meet its long-term energy goals, with the majority of its population now having access to sustainable energy sources.
