EnvironmentTechnology AustraliaBattery Boom Helps Cut Power Costs
Australia’s rapid expansion of large-scale and household batteries is helping lower electricity costs while accelerating the shift to cleaner energy.
“The key turning difference is we’re now storing that renewable energy for nighttime, reducing reliance on coal and gas,” said Chris Bowen, Australia’s Minister for Climate Change and Energy.
Battery capacity connected to Australia’s power grid has grown dramatically, with more capacity added in 2025 than in the previous eight years combined. In the first quarter of 2026, battery use on the East Coast grid was three times higher than a year earlier, while wholesale electricity prices fell by 12 per cent. More than 200,000 home batteries were installed in the first four months of 2026, supported by government rebates, and more than half a million are expected to be installed within the scheme’s first year. Energy experts say batteries are increasingly storing low-cost solar power generated during the day and supplying it during evening peaks, reducing reliance on gas and helping make renewable energy more affordable and reliable for households.
