Health The WorldCOVID-19: How Vaccination Efforts Saved Millions of Lives
According to a newly published study, the first large modeling of its kind, vaccination efforts against coronavirus have helped prevent some 20 million deaths from occurring across the globe.
“Millions of lives have probably been saved by making vaccines available to people around the world,” says Oliver Watson of Imperial College London, lead author of the study.
The study is based on data collected from 185 countries and territories – excluding China – between December 8th, 2020, and December 8th, 2021. Some 19.8 million lives were saved out of a potential 31.4 million deaths – a 63% reduction – as shown in this first attempt to estimate the number of deaths prevented thanks to Covid-19 vaccines. High- and middle-income countries have averted the largest number of deaths with 12.2 million out of the 19.8 million.
