Smartphone App to Save Lives of Millions of Women and Children

A $100 million initiative will provide health workers in India and Uganda with smartphones and tablets to access affordable data analytic tools that help save mothers’ and babies’ lives.

A recent U.N. report showed that maternal deaths are fifty times higher in sub-Saharan Africa than in wealthy nations, and babies are ten times more prone to dying in their first month.

With a plan to prevent six million women and children from premature death by 2030, the Rockefeller Foundation, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the World Bank – among others – have joined hands to fund the project, which will be extended to an additional eight countries.

The digital tool will offer real-time risk maps, climate pattern analysis and social media trends to help health workers prepare for health emergencies and efficiently reach out to those in need.

“Timely, reliable and disaggregated data, underpinned by a commitment to universal health coverage, can ensure that vulnerable women, children and young people get the care they need at the right place and the right time,” says Henrietta Fore, UNICEF’s executive director.
