Old Red Buses Turn into Houses for London’s Homeless

Transport company Stagecoach has donated four decommissioned buses to social enterprise Buses4Homeless, in order to provide a space for those in need.

During a three-month program, passengers would be entitled to welcome massages, job training, yoga and cooking classes in a space for up to 40 people. A separate “sleeping bus” would contain around 20 sleeping pods, each with their own sockets and blinds for privacy.

Additional to providing safe shelter, Buses4Homeless aims to launch a platform where people can train on getting back on their feet, while increasing their possibility of being linked to potential job opportunities.

Dan Atkins, founder of Buses4Homeless, commented on the abundance of buses that end up in the scrapyard, adding, “Why not upcycle as many as we can?” If the project proves to be a success, Atkins plans to convert some of the buses into two or three bedroom flats for homeless families.
